HOW TO USE AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST

If your vehicle has this available feature, Automatic Parking Assist can automatically steer to place your vehicle into a detected parallel or perpendicular parking space while you brake and shift gears. You must always be prepared to override the feature and take control.

HOW AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST WORKS

  • Automatic Parking Assist, if equipped, uses ultrasonic sensors located at the vehicle’s front, rear and sides to detect a parking spot.
  • The system figures out where it can park by detecting vehicles around it. If there are no vehicles nearby, the system won't work.
  • Once it detects a parking space, the system then automatically steers your vehicle into the space while moving at idle speed. While the system steers, you'll take your hands off the steering wheel, select FORWARD or REVERSE gears as prompted and brake when needed.
  • While the feature is active, you must:

a. Always be prepared to override the feature by steering.

b. Always be prepared to apply harder braking as needed during the manoeuvre.

PARKING WITH AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST

  • You need to have your seat belt buckled to use this feature.
  • To turn Automatic Parking Assist on, either press the button on the dash (that looks like the letter P with lines facing two squares) or activate it through your centre display. How you turn the feature on will depend on your vehicle.
  • The system can detect parking spots while moving forward at low speeds (below 29 kph).
  • To use Automatic Parking Assist to search for a parking space on the right of the vehicle, push the Automatic Parking Assist button. The system will search for a parking space that is large enough. To use it for a space on the left, use the left turn signal or select the left side from the centre display.

HOW AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST PARKS

  • You’ll hear a beep to let you know the system has detected a large enough parking space. Instructions will appear on the driver display or centre display telling you when to stop and shift to REVERSE.
  • Your steering wheel may shake to let you know you can remove your hands from the wheel.
  • During automatic parking, the vehicle will move at idle speed (maximum of 4.8 km/hr)  and steer into the detected space.
  • Continue watching driver display or centre display for step-by-step instructions on when to brake, shift gears and remove your hands from the steering wheel. You’ll hear beeps as new instructions appear.
  • You’ll see a progress bar display the status of the parking manoeuvre.
  • In small or tight spaces, it may take multiple manoeuvres to park your vehicle.
  • Automatic Parking Assist will beep and display a “Parking Complete” message when it’s done. At this time, you should apply the brakes and place the vehicle in PARK.

HOW TO CANCEL AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST

  • If you want to cancel the manoeuvre, either press the Automatic Parking Assist button or take control of the steering wheel.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN USING AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST

  • The feature won't work if you seat belt isn't buckled. You'll get a message saying the system is unavailable if you're not buckled.
  • Remember, Automatic Parking Assist does not respond to changes in the parking space, such as the movement of a nearby vehicle or a person or object entering the parking space. Automatic Parking Assist does not detect or avoid traffic that is behind or next to your vehicle. Always be prepared to stop the vehicle during parking manoeuvres.
  • Always be prepared to shift gears, accelerate or brake, as needed.
  • The feature will remain active if you press the brake pedal, unless the brake pedal is pressed and held for an extended period of time.
  • You’ll still receive Parking Assist alerts and Safety Alert Seat pulses (if your vehicle is equipped with Safety Alert Seat) during the Automatic Parking Assist manoeuvre to keep you aware of detected objects around your vehicle.
  • Keep the Automatic Parking Assist sensors clean to ensure the system works effectively. There are 12 sensors located on the front and rear bumpers. For more information on the system’s sensors, see the Automatic Parking Assist Troubleshooting article.

Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather, and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.

WHAT IF THE VEHICLE DOESN’T DETECT THE SPACE WHERE I WANT TO PARK?

Automatic Park Assist is designed to help you park alongside a detected vehicle or vehicles. If the space is on the left, you should make sure you have turned on the left turn signal or selected the parking side from the infotainment centrestack display. Automatic Park Assist may not detect spaces that are too small. Other factors could be low-visibility conditions, such as heavy snow or fog, or dirt on the sensors. You should always keep these sensors clean. They’re located on the front and rear bumpers and on the front and rear side panels.

HOW CAN I CANCEL AUTOMATIC PARKING ASSIST ONCE IT’S BEGUN?

You can always press the Automatic Parking Assist button or turn the steering wheel to override the feature. If you brake, Automatic Parking Assist will not disengage and will continue to  manoeuvre when you lift your foot off the brake pedal. If you begin manual steering, it automatically disengages the system. The system will abort if the brake pedal is pressed for an extended period of time or if the system has been inactive for a prolonged period of time.

WHY DID AUTOMATIC PARKING STOP? I DIDN’T OVERRIDE THE FEATURE.

The system will stop working if you open the driver door with an unfastened seat belt, open the trunk or exceed the maximum allowed speed. You will see a message in your Driver Information Centre (DIC) indicating that the manoeuvre has been cancelled. The system will also disengage if there is a high-priority vehicle message in the DIC or if there is a failure in the Automatic Parking Assist system.
