ABOUT NIGHT VISION

If your vehicle has this available feature, Night Vision displays a thermal image to help you see beyond your headlamps and alerts you to detected pedestrians or large animals directly ahead of you.

How It Works

  • Night Vision uses an infrared sensor in your vehicle’s lower grille to detect pedestrians and animals ahead of you. When it’s dark enough, the system is designed to detect objects up to 100 metres away.
  • Night Vision will display an infrared camera feed in your instrument cluster when you select it. The system is designed to display warmer detected objects, such as pedestrians or large animals, as lighter on the Night Vision image.
    • You can select Night Vision as the instrument cluster view at any time. When it is dark enough, it will highlight pedestrians and animals when:
      • Your vehicle is in DRIVE/a FORWARD gear and the headlamps are on.
      • Your vehicle is in PARK and the headlamps are off.
  • If a pedestrian or large animal is detected more than approximately 9 metres in front of the vehicle, you’ll see a yellow box appear around the displayed animal or pedestrian.
    • Depending on your vehicle, an amber pedestrian/large animal crossing icon will appear on the instrument panel and Head-Up Display (if equipped).
    • On some vehicles, you may also see a yellow box around the highlighted object, which will transition to an amber box and then a red one as you approach.
  • On some vehicles, if the system detects that you are approaching a pedestrian or large animal too quickly, the yellow box will change to red and a red “Collision Alert” will flash in the windshield and Head-Up Display (if equipped). You’ll also hear eight high-pitched front beeps or five left and right Safety Alert Seat pulses (depending on your Alert Type menu option).
    • On some vehicles, you may also see a yellow box around the highlighted object, which will transition to an amber box and then a red one as you approach.
  • You can turn these alerts on or off in the Settings menu of your infotainment system. On some vehicles, you may have to customize alerts using the Forward Collision Alert settings instead of Night Vision settings
  • Night Vision will not activate braking or steering. It is designed to alert you of pedestrians and large animals detected ahead
  • On some vehicles, you may adjust the brightness and contrast of the Night Vision image. You may also dim or brighten the entire Driver Information Centre display, including Night Vision, using the interior light switch (depending on your model)

Q&As
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY VEHICLE HAS THIS FEATURE?

If you see Night Vision as a selectable page in the Driver Information Centre (DIC), you have this feature. On some vehicles, you may see the option to select Night Vision in the Control Panel to the left of the DIC.

WILL NIGHT VISION PREVENT ME FROM COLLIDING WITH A PEDESTRIAN OR LARGE ANIMAL AFTER DARK?

No. Night Vision is only designed to alert you, not to activate braking or steering if it detects an object ahead. Remain alert while driving.

IF A SMALL ANIMAL CROSSES THE ROAD AHEAD OF MY VEHICLE, WILL THE NIGHT VISION SYSTEM ALERT ME?

Night Vision may detect small animals, but it is designed to highlight people and larger animals.

WILL NIGHT VISION DETECT CHILDREN?

Night Vision can detect children 1.2 metres or taller who are walking or standing.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY NIGHT VISION CAMERA?

The Night Vision wash system will automatically activate when the system detects the camera is dirty. It will also activate after every five pulls of the windshield washer lever.

If the system cannot be cleaned automatically, a “Night Vision Temporarily Unavailable” message will be displayed on the DIC. If you see this message, clean the camera manually with a soft cloth and glass cleaner. The message will go away the next time you turn your vehicle on.

DOES NIGHT VISION STILL WORK IF I DON’T SEE THE VIDEO FEED?

Yes. The Night Vision system will detect pedestrians and larger animals if it is dark enough. If the Night Vision video is not being shown, you will still see alerts appear on the Head-Up Display/DIC and/or feel the Safety Alert Seat activate (depending on your settings).

WHY AM I SEEING A “NIGHT VISION DETECTION UNAVAILABLE” MESSAGE?

It may not be dark enough for Night Vision to work. High temperatures (above about 30 degrees Celsius) can also interfere with the infrared camera.

WHEN IS NIGHT VISION VIDEO AVAILABLE?

Night Vision video is available at all times, night or day. However, it will only alert you to threats if it's dark enough out and your headlamps are on when your vehicle is in a FORWARD gear. If you're in PARK and your headlamps are off, Night Vision will also detect objects. In either of these situations, you'll see the alerts and icons described above.

If you select the Night Vision view when it’s not dark enough out, you’ll see an “Object Detection Unavailable” message in your instrument cluster letting you know it’s not detecting objects.
